   Step 1
   What is a headshot?:
   A headshot is a 10 x 8 (inches) image and is very similar to a portrait or a 'mug shot'. 10 x 8 is a measurement and the size of an image. It commonly includes head & shoulders, and focuses on the face of the person.

   10 x 8 headshots are effectively a resume for actors and performers who present it to potential employers and casting directors. Casting directors then decide if that person is right for the particular role.

   Actors' headshots In the UK are traditionally black and white as originally they were photographed in B&W film. In USA on the other hand, headshots are mostly done in colour. Therefore, if you are travelling to USA for a casting, make sure you have a copy of your headshot in colour; or if you are about to have a photography session then let your photographer know which market your headshot is for.

   Step 4
   There are two commonly known types of headshots for Actors and Performers:
   
   + Commercial - typically (not always) has the person smiling and projects warmth and friendliness. Those headshots are often used for commercial and advertising work. However, some actors also display them online next to their theatrical headshot.
   
   +Theatrical - usually serious, focused and actors are NOT smiling.

   Step 5
   Advise: Good headshot should reflect person's qualities and show their exact age, hair style and colour, etc., i.e. should be natural and reflecting person's current look. Therefore, if you have had a hair cut or coloured your hair then you need a new headshot. Headshots normally need to be updated around every 2 years.

   Step 6
   Headshot should invite the viewer in and make them want to know a person better. It should also provide a glimpse into the person's character or present their potential for the role a casting director is looking to fill. Therefore here it is important to make the first impression count as there will be no second chance to impress your future employer!

   What to wear?
   Wear something simple and neutral coloured (usually black or white) clothing that does not contain prints. The focus and attention should be emphasised on the face and not the t-shirt with imprinted flowers or palm trees or logos! Try also to avoid materials such as velvet as it absorbs the light and is not visible on the B&W image.

   How much does a headshot cost?:
   Actors' headshots could cost anything between £60 and £250. Going for the cheapest or the most expensive options may not be the best choices sometimes. There could be possibilities of either not getting a good quality or simply overpaying for the services that could be obtained elsewhere.

   Step 9
   Many photographers offer different service packages that may include make-up, hair styling, and an option of costume changes, variations on hours and number of photographs taken. Some photographers also offer cheaper sessions because they shoot from home and do not have large overheads from hiring studios. It is up to an Actor to decide, which option is the most appropriate for them.

    Step 10
    Therefore, it could be advised:
    Firstly a person planning to do their headshot needs to look at photographer's portfolio (online or a hard copy) to determine if their style of headshots photography is right for them. It would also help if you like the photographer's personality. This would help you to relax and give your best in front of the camera. Therefore, it is always helpful to have a chat with your chosen photographer on the phone or in person before the session.

    Second, enquire if services such as make-up and a costume change are available. Many photographers collaborate with professional make-up artists that could be hired for an extra fee. However, keep in mind that headshots should look like you and be natural and not over glamorous.

12. Step 1
    Your headshot needs to be a clear image of who you are. One novice mistake is that headshots are glamour shots. Instead you need to develop an image of your characteristics and make them appear in a natural setting.

    Decide what qualities you would like to feature to further your career in acting. Do you have a distinct face, a sly smile or strong eyes? Any feature can be further highlighted to better your appearance on your headshots.
14. Step 3
    Decide what part of your image is completely distinctive and make sure you make it show. While you may have distinctive features, there are probably poses and body features that highlight your physical features as well.
15. Step 4
    Find the perfect clothing or outfit to share on film. Bring several outfits to work with and help focus on your physical and facial attributes. When you get to the headshot photographer appointment try on the outfits and decide what fits your headshot.

What to wear for the headshots

How to Choose What to Wear for Headshots

1. Step 1
   Wear a top that is a solid color. Prints and patterns do not photograph nearly as well, and may take away from the focal point of the headshot--your face. You can stick to either a basic white or black if your headshot will be in black and white, rather than color, but make sure whatever you wear doesn't blend into the background too much. If your headshot will be in color, you should choose a color that compliments your skin tone and wear a top with a very simple style.
   
2. Step 2
   Decide what type of neckline accentuates your features. If you want to elongate your neck, wear a v-neck. To show off your collarbones, wear a scoop-necked shirt. If you are large chested, make sure you wear a higher neckline.
   
3. Step 3
   Bring several choices of tops with you to the photo shoot. This will give you options. Sometimes, what looks good in person does not look as good on film and vice versa. Therefore, you will want to have options and be able to change your look.
   
4. Step 4
   Keep your hair and hands out of your face. You want the employer or casting director to be able to see your face very well, and you don't want any part of it to be hidden.
   
5. Step 5
   Resist the urge to wear accessories. In terms of headshots, less is more. You want your headshot to be simple, elegant, and representative of you.
   
6. Step 6
   Wear makeup, but don't overdo it. You need a nice base that will photograph well, but you still want to look like yourself in the headshot. You can get your makeup done for free, or at the cost of purchasing a product at many of the cosmetic stands in a department store
   
   
   
   Tips & Warnings

   • Make sure the top you choose has a neckline that flatters your face.
   • Wear solid, neutral colors that don't blend into the background too much.
   • Don't wear busy prints or a shirt with a graphic logo on it. It will detract from your face, and that is what the employer or casting director will be looking at.
   • Don't wear headbands or anything in your hair. That could lead to type casting for certain acting jobs.
   • Don't wear a strapless top if you have tan lines.
